Motion Sensor Innovations in the Spotlight at CEDIA Expo/CIX 2026

Published: April 15, 2026

ALPHARETTA, Georgia, April 22, 2026 — At CEDIA Expo/CIX 2026, residential and commercial systems integrators will discover how motion detection and occupancy sensing are driving new opportunities in security, automation, comfort, and safety. Taking place September 2–4 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, the show will feature various manufacturers demonstrating motion-sensing technologies that drive everything from smart home automation to security monitoring and building efficiency.

“Motion sensors can initiate experiences such as opening shades as occupants enter a room, adjusting climate settings based on presence, activating music or video displays, and triggering lighting scenes throughout the home,” said Jason McGraw, Show Director for CEDIA Expo/CIX. “It’s a core component behind many of the experiences homeowners and businesses want today — from responsive lighting and security alerts to fully automated environments that adapt to how people move through a space.”

Applications Extend from Homes to Businesses
For integrators looking to expand beyond residential projects, motion-sensing technologies represent a natural bridge into commercial opportunities. Occupancy detection plays a key role in energy management systems, enabling lighting, HVAC, and other building functions to operate only when spaces are in use. At the same time, motion detection remains a core component of integrated security systems for offices, retail environments, and hospitality venues.

“Many integrators already install motion sensors as part of residential systems,” McGraw said. “Those same technologies can deliver tremendous value in commercial spaces where efficiency, security, and automation all depend on knowing when a space is occupied.”

Motion Sensing Technologies Across the Show Floor
The latest generation of motion sensing moves well beyond traditional passive infrared. Dual-technology sensors (PIR + microwave), radar-based detection, presence sensing capable of identifying subtle human movement, and multimodal detection systems are dramatically reducing false triggers while improving responsiveness and coverage.

The show floor will feature a wide range of manufacturers demonstrating the latest in motion-sensing technology. Exhibitors, including Nice, Lutron, and Crestron, as well as a wide range of security and control system manufacturers, will be on hand with products spanning the full residential and commercial security ecosystem.

“CEDIA Expo/CIX continues to offer meaningful opportunities for connection across the industry, and experiencing it firsthand always provides a valuable perspective,” said Michael Short, VP of Marketing Operations and Residential at Crestron Electronics. “Motion sensing lighting for us isn’t just about lighting though, it’s a core element of how a home responds to the people living in it. At Crestron, it’s one piece of a wider ecosystem where every input, every trigger, works together to craft a truly intelligent and personalized environment for our clients.”

Seeing these technologies demonstrated live allows integrators to compare sensing technologies, explore integration possibilities, and understand how motion detection fits into larger automation ecosystems.

Education and Insights for Integrators
Beyond the show floor, motion sensing and automation design will also be explored through live programming at the event. The Smart Stage, located directly on the show floor, will host expert panels and discussions examining emerging technologies and practical strategies for adding new products and solutions to integration businesses. The comprehensive Smart Stage schedule can be found here.

These sessions — free for attendees — provide an opportunity to hear directly from manufacturers, technology leaders, and integrators who are already building security into their offerings.

In addition, CEDIA’s professional education program will deliver deeper technical training in system design, integration best practices, and business development strategies aligned with the rapidly evolving smart-home ecosystem.

On Tuesday, September 1, at 12:30 PM, attendees are encouraged to sign up for the Where Art Meets Automation: A Designer’s Guide to Intelligent Lighting Control session. This session will explore how lighting serves as the key element that unifies architecture, interior design, and technology. Perfect for integrators aiming to participate in the design process from the beginning or a designer looking to integrate lighting control more thoughtfully. Visit the CEDIA Expo/CIX website to find the entire CEDIA Education Conference schedule.

The Industry’s Annual Gathering
In addition to technology discovery and education, CEDIA Expo/CIX also provides an unmatched networking environment for the custom integration community. From industry meetups and training sessions to special events such as the CE Pro All-Star Band opening night celebration, the show fosters the connections that help drive new partnerships and projects.

CEDIA Expo/CIX provides a rare convergence of residential and commercial integrators, manufacturers, and design professionals. Conversations that begin on the show floor influence specifications, partnerships, and purchasing decisions across thousands of projects nationwide.

Why Integrators Can’t Afford to Miss CEDIA Expo/CIX
For residential and resimercial integrators navigating the growing demand for integrated technology solutions, attending CEDIA Expo/CIX 2026 offers a valuable opportunity to understand where the market is heading and how their businesses can capitalize on it.

The event offers a unique opportunity to see how motion-sensing technologies are enabling smarter, more responsive environments. By exploring new products on the show floor, engaging with manufacturers, and learning from industry experts, attendees will gain practical insights into how motion sensing technology can expand their product offerings and strengthen client relationships.

“There is simply no other event in North America that brings together this many custom residential integrators, manufacturers, and educational opportunities in one place,” McGraw said. “If you want to understand the future of intelligent homes and integrated technology, this is where that conversation happens.”

CEDIA Expo/CIX will return to Denver from Tuesday, September 1, to Friday, September 4, 2026.
